Serena Williams dominated Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the quarterfinals of their Olympic match, 6-0, 6-3. Serena hit powerful groundstrokes and even a left-handed forehand to defeat the former number one-ranked and eighth-seeded women’s singles Olympian Wozniacki. Serena has only lost a total of 13 games in four Olympic rounds so far. She has not yet won a singles medal at the Olympics. Including winning her fifth Wimbledon title last month, Serena has won 11 consecutive matches at the All England Club.
Up next for Serena and a chance at the finals is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Angelique Kerber of Germany on Thursday. The two traded breaks of serve throughout the match, but it was Azarenka who stepped up her returning at crunch time, breaking in the final game of both sets. Azarenka won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last January. Similar to Serena, she is also seeking her first Olympic singles medal.
"We had the longest rallies. At one point I just couldn’t believe when it was going to be over during the point," Azarenka said. "It was a really tough one, a very good match from both of us. We showed very high quality tennis and a big fight today, and there’s nothing more that you could ask from both of us."
