Serena Williams was a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets winner on Tuesday over Angelique Kerber at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. In her last appearance at the tournament three years ago, Serena played two sets of near-flawless tennis to defeat her sister, Venus Williams. The last time Serena went head to head with Kerber, she came off second best—a tight two set defeat in Cincinnati leaving the only blemish on an otherwise perfect second half of the season—and judging by her tennis at the end of the second set, it was clearly an experience she did not enjoy.

"I started so fast, but then I lost serve and brought her right back into the game," said Serena. "But she’s playing really well and it wasn’t an easy match today. I hadn’t played since the U.S. Open and I was trying to feel the ball a little and I’ve been practicing really well. I just need to try and be a bit more consistent and play like I’ve been for most of the season."
