World number one and top-seeded Serena Williams put on a display Tuesday night at the U.S. Open, after a 6-0, 6-0 win over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 31-year-old Serena will be playing in her 24th career major semifinal and is now 244-36 in Grand Slam matches, fourth on the all-time list, and to date in 2013, sports a record of 65-4.
Serena’s semifinal opponent will be the number five seed, China’s Na Li, a winner earlier in the day, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2 over the 24th-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova. It will be Li’s first ever semifinals appearance at the U.S. Open, and is 1-8 lifetime against Serena, who has beaten Li twice so far in 2013, including a 7-5, 7-5 semifinals win just last month in Cincinnati.
“I hope I haven’t peaked yet,” said Serena. “I’m just trying to do the best that I can.”
Serena is a four-time U.S. Open champ, seeking a personal-best ninth title in 2013 is 65-4 so far on the 2013 season.
