Serena Williams decribed it as "he scariest moment in my life” recently when she was diagnosed and treated for a pulmonary embolism or a blood clot in her lung. She underwent emergency surgery to remove the clot and is progressing as expected. She has targeted this summer as her goal to return to the pro ranks, marking nearly a year since her last on-court appearance, a win in the finals of Wimbledon 2010.

She missed time due to a cut on her foot suffered while celebrating her Wimbledon win while in Germany. Compliactions with the foot injury caused her to miss the rest of the 2010 season and she was expected to return to the WTA circuit in early 2011, but her latest medical setback has pushed her return to the middle of the year.

She was on blood thinner medication and developed a hematoma in her stomach that grew in size. It was to be drained, but due to its size, had to be surgically removed.
