Serena Williams returned to the professional tennis court for the first time in nearly four years a couple of weeks ago at the HSBC Championships. And now, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is returning to the singles court, as she accepted a Wimbledon ladies’ singles wild card, the tournament announced Sunday.

Her opening round match at Wimbledon will be her first singles match since she retired after her loss to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 U.S. Open. Williams is a seven-time singles champion at the All-England Lawn Club, in addition to six ladies’ doubles titles and one mixed doubles championship.

Williams returned to the court last month as she paired with Canada’s Victoria Mboko in doubles play at the HSBC Championships, and they won their opening match 7-6(2), 6-2. The pair had to withdraw afterwards as Mboko was injured in her singles match the next day.

Williams will try to become the first ladies’ singles player ever to win Wimbledon as a wild card.
