Serena Williams has been admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where she received emergency surgery on Monday to treat a pulmonary embolism or a blood clot in her lung. The clot was discovered during a routine examination on her foot that was cut last July after a celebration on winning the 2010 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Title. She has since falled to 11th in the WTA rankings and this current medical issue derails her plans to resume her come back in the early part of 2011.

You may follow Serena’s progress as she updates her medical condition at the official Serena Williams Twitter account @serenawilliams.
