Serena Williams has said that her emotions controlled her when she confronted the chair umpire during her 2011 U.S. Open women’s final loss to Australian Samantha Stosur, 6-2, 6-3, last week in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Using the social medium Twitter to express her regret, Williams tweeted, "My emotions did get the best of me this past weekend when I disagreed with the umpire."
After all the commotion, Williams was fined $2,000 for the verbal abuse imposed upon umpire Eva Asderaki. The argument arose when Williams was down a break point and yelled "Come on!" prior to the point being over when Stosur got her racquet tip on the ball. Asderaki gave Stosur the point as per the hindrance rule states. It was up to the umpire to use discretion as to whether the point was given or replayed by both opponents. The game was lost by Williams who would have tied the game at deuce had she not screamed.
