World number one Serena Williams advanced to the Women’s Singles Quarterfinals Monday afternoon at Flushing Meadows, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kaia Kanepi. The win marked Serena’s first quarterfinals appearance of the year, where she moves on to face Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, a straight set winner Monday afternoon as well over Casey Dellacqua. Serena holds a perfect 5-0 lifetime record against Pennetta, the most recent win just last month at the Western & Southern Open.
"I never thought it would be so exciting to reach a quarterfinal," Williams said. "It feels good. Obviously, I don't want this to end.”
Coming into the match, Kanepi was 5-0 in Grand Slam fourth round matches, as Serena lost just 17 games, the fewest of any quarterfinalist to date at the Open.
"I had really good matches this tournament," Kanepi said. "I think I gained confidence for the upcoming ones. I played aggressive and stayed calm on the court."
