Maria Sharapova’s popularity has skyrocketed as she surpassed 10 million fans on Facebook this past week. Sharapova currently has 10,006,973 fans, securing her spot as the top female athlete on Facebook. Sharapova was the most searched athlete on Bing in 2011 and she also gained 221,000 followers on Twitter after only four months of having a Twitter account (@MariaSharapova) during the Australian Open.
At the start of the 2013 season, Sharapova had won her 28th and 29th WTA titles at Indian Wells and in Stuttgart. Currently ranked number two in the WTA Women’s Singles Rankings behind American Serena Williams, Sharapova will defend her title at next week’s French Open. At last year’s French Open, Sharapova became the 10th woman in WTA history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
