Sock Rolls Into Second Round of U.S. Open

August 27, 2018 | By Brian Coleman

Entering Monday’s first round showdown with Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi, American Jack Sock had lost in the opening round at five of the last six Grand Slams. But the 18th seed from Lincoln, Neb. looked sharp on Court 17 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Monday as he rolled past Andreozzi, 6-0, 7-6(4), 6-2.

Sock quickly took control of the match from the beginning, breaking for 2-0 and never looking back to hand Andreozzi a first set bagel. Andreozzi found some rhythm in the second set and was able to establish his serve, but Sock would play better tennis in the tiebreaker, winning five straight points to close out the set.

In the third set, Sock hit 10 winners and broke twice to win the match in straight sets and push through to the second round. The victory snapped a nine-match losing streak for the American, and he admitted he felt some relief after coming out on the winning end of things on Monday.

“I just looked over at my team and I was signaling I was getting the monkey off my back,” Sock said afterwards about a gesture he made after the win. “It felt like King Kong was on my back there for a while. It was nice to just get it off. Now I can play free.”

Up next for Sock is either Aljaz Bedene or Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Canada’s Milos Raonic outlasted Argentinean qualifier Carlos Berloq 7-6(4), 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to secure his spot in the second round.

Raonic blasted 26 aces and 66 winners to down Berloq in four sets. The 25th seed meets France’s Gilles Simon next. Simon was a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 winner over South African qualifier Lloyd Harris earlier in the day.

Russia’s Karen Khachanov wasted no time in securing his spot in the second round as he breezed past Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Khachanov awaits the winner of the match between Gilles Muller and Lorenzo Sonego.
