Syosset’s Mehta Organizes Free Clinic for Community

During spring break, a group of tennis players from Syosset High School came together to hold a community clinic for elementary and middle school players. The program included 46 kids who had little to no experience playing tennis before. The kids were divided into three one-and-a-half-hour sessions, so that they would receive a more personalized session and learn with others who were of similar age and ability.

With five experienced coaches at each session, each kid was able to receive personalized instruction from their respective coach. The players started off with warm ups and hand-eye coordination activities, then, they were taught proper forehand and backhand form to establish a strong foundation of learning to grow off of. Players then took their skills and participated in games, and the event was finished off with an exciting relay race.

The initiative for this event began with Sanam Mehta, an intern on the Long Island Tennis Magazine event team and ambassador Girl Scout, who created this clinic as a part of her Gold Award Project. The Gold Award Project is a time-intensive and creative project that is aimed to improve the community in Nassau County and hold implications for the future. The goal of this clinic was to reduce social inequality by providing free lessons and materials to all of Nassau County youth.

The clinic offered donated racquets to the players who didn’t already have a racquet. These racquets were donated from Woodbury Sports, 40 Love Lifestyle and Carefree Racquet Club.

After the clinic, participants’ parents were sent a feedback form, and the responses were a great indication that the event had a positive impact on the kids, and provides the motivation for Mehta and her team to hold more of these clinics.

“I’m grateful to the volunteers who helped out to make this clinic a great opportunity for underprivileged kids in the community,” said Mehta. “I could definitely tell that the kids were forming strong bonds with each other and making friends through a sport that I have always found to bring people together. I’m excited for the future of these clinics and these players!”
