In the summer of 1976, when Bjorn Borg was the hottest commodity on the international tennis circuit, TAF Tennis Ladders of Long Island (formerly known as TAF or Tennis Association of Farmingdale), was formed as an inexpensive means for people of all abilities to play tennis in the Farmingdale area to meet the intense excitement around the game.

This summer, TAF Tennis Ladders celebrates its 50th year in existence outlasting any other Long Island community tennis organization.

On Saturday, June 28th from 9.00am – 2.30pm, (rain date Sunday, June 29th), TAF Tennis Ladders members and their guests will congregate at the annual tennis picnic where they’ll be fun drills and round robin tennis play across the 8 Farmingdale College courts, with tennis pros on hand to assist. There will be a picnic style lunch and free raffles. For this special celebration year, we will include prizes for the most authentic 1970’s tennis outfits, and wooden racquets will be on show for photo opportunities. There is a nominal $5 cost for those members who wish to place a lunch order. You can sign up via the TAF Tennis website at www.taftennis.org.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) confirmed that tennis participation in the United States has surged to a new high of 25.7 million players following five consecutive years of growth. One in every 12 Americans played tennis in 2024 – the highest proportion on record.

Those involved in organizing TAF Tennis Ladders since that day in 1976 achieved their goal of bringing players together for the enjoyment of the game, but that goal was exceeded by a more significant benefit; as members became acquainted, they became true and close friends. Society has changed incredibly since 1976, but the concepts of good sportsmanship, voluntary cooperation and fair play have not changed and will remain to ensure the organization continues to thrive in the future.

Headquartered in Farmingdale, NY, TAF Tennis Ladders of Long Island is a non-profit organization that runs seven all-outdoor tennis ladders from April to October for all ages and abilities. The cost to join is just $35 annually. Join anytime at: www.taftennis.org.
