Ten U.S. Women Into Second Round of French Open

Jamie Hampton gave the United States10 women in the French Open’s second round for the second consecutive year, after her 7-6 (5), 3-6, 9-7 win over the number 25 seed, Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. Hampton’s best Grand Slam showing came at the Australian Open in January, when she pushed eventual champion Victoria Azarenka to three sets in the third round while dealing with a lower back problem.
The 10 Americans into the second round at the clay-court major tournament in 2012 and 2013 are the most since 11 did it in 2003. As few as four got that far in several recent years: 2011, 2009, 2008, 2006 and 2005.
In addition to Hampton, who is set to next face Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the remaining American women in the second round at Roland Garros includes:

â–ºMelanie Oudin who will next meet China’s Jie Zheng
â–ºTop-seeded Serena Williams who has moved onto round three where she will face Sorana Cirstea of Romania
â–ºThe 29th-seeded Varvara Lepchenko who also moved into round three and will face the number eight seed, German Angelique Kerber
â–ºMallory Burdette who fell in round two to the number four seed, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland
â–ºMadison Keys who lost out to Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig
â–ºShelby Rogers who fell in round two to the 20th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain
