Top Nassau County Boys High School Players Square Off at 2011 County Championships

On Saturday, May 14, the Nassau County High School Boys Tennis Individual Championships were held at Oceanside High School. The top players in the county in both singles and doubles took part.
In the singles draw, there were not too many surprises, as three of the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. Top-seeded Zach Morris of Garden City defeated Cold Spring Harbor’s Alex Tropiano in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal match with the number four seed, Brendan Henry of Farmingdale. Henry advanced the semis by defeating Jon DeFrancesh of Friends Academy, 6-1,6-2.
On the bottom half of the draw second seeded Josh Levine of Cold Spring Harbor dispatched of Plainview JFK’s Ofir Solomon in straight sets 6-1,6-1. Levine will now face off with Vihar Shah of Herricks. Shah pulled off the biggest surprise of the singles tournament thus far by knocking off third-seeded Eric Ambrosio of Cold Spring Harbor, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). The final foursome should be entertaining as none of the four have dropped a set through the tournament to date.
In the doubles draw, there were two big early upsets, as the second and third seeds were both knocked out of contention. Not affected by the upset bug was the top half of the draw where the top-seeded team of Kevin Katz & Stephen Peng of Syosset, who won their quarterfinal match in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, will now face the fourth-seeded team of Hewlett’s J.J Tauil & Dan Grinshteyn. Tauil & Grinshteyn also won their quarterfinal match in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4. The other semifinal match will be a battle between the two teams who pulled the early upsets. Great Neck North’s Doron Sarat & Jared Lewis upset the second-seeded Pleat Brothers from Herricks in the second round, and then pulled out a tough three-set quarterfinals win to advance, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. They will square off with John Paris & Conor Mullins of Cold Spring Harbor in the semifinals. Paris & Mullins beat the third seeds, Zach Mintz and Matt Kline of Roslyn in the third round and then won their quarterfinals match, 6-2, 7-6(5) to advance.
The semifinals and finals were supposed to be played on Sunday morning, but were rained out. They will now be played this coming Saturday, May 21st at 8:00 a.m. at Oceanside High School. The top three in both singles and doubles will advance to the New York State Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, June 2-4, 2011.
