U.S. Open Day Four Recap: Paul Impresses To Advance to Third Round

American Tommy Paul moved into the third-round of the U.S. Open on Thursday as he defeated Max Purcell 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 (ret.) on Grandstand.
“It’s unfortunate,” Paul said of Purcell’s retirement. “The first set was super entertaining tennis. I love the way that he plays. It was great tennis on both sides of the court.”
After a tough first set, Paul dominated the second set. He hit 11 winners and committed 0 unforced errors to take the commanding lead.
“I thought if the first set level kept up through the entire match, it would have been a really awesome match,” Paul added. “But I picked up my level there in the second a lot. I could tell he was slowing down. I didn’t know what the problem was. So I kind of got to ignore it and kind of focus on myself.”
Up next for the 14th seeded American is Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo, who continued his run in New York with a 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 victory over 24th seeded Frenchman Arthur Fils.
Other winners on the men’s side on Thursday included 10th seed Alex de Minaur, 30th seeded Jakub Mensik and Jordan Thompson, who upset seventh-seed Hubert Hurkacz.
