U.S. Open Recap: Kuznetsova Upset as Ivanovic and Bouchard Move Into Round Two

In action Tuesday at the U.S. Open, it was former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova who was upset by New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. Kuznetsova, the 2004 U.S. Open singles champion and a 2007 U.S. Open finalist, made three major quarterfinals in the last two years, while Erakovic was a winner of last week’s Connecticut Open with her partner Arantxa Parra Santonja. A few weeks back, she reached the semifinals in Washington, D.C., the same event Kuznetsova went on to take the title at.
Up next for Erakovic is Russian Elena Vesnina, a 6-0, 7-5 winner Tuesday over Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei.
Also advancing to round two Tuesday was Ana Ivanovic, the number eight seed from Serbia, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over American Alison Riske. Ivanovic will next face Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Yvonne Meusburger on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-2.
“The confidence is on a high level,” said Ivanovic, who has now won 48 matches on the year, leading the WTA Tour. “I had a great season behind me.”
Canada's Eugenie Bouchard moved into the second round Tuesday as well, after her 6-2, 6-1 win over Olga Govortsova of Belarus. Seeded seventh at the Open, Bouchard will play Romania's Sorana Cirstea in the second round after Cirstea’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Great Britain’s Heather Watson. Bouchard has advanced to at least the semifinals at the previous three Grand Slam events she has been in.
Australia's Samantha Stosur will move on as well after her 6-1, 6-4 win in just 77 minutes Tuesday over American Lauren Davis. Stosur will meet Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in the second round later in the week.
