The USTA Eastern Long Island Region has announced that Susan Alvy, recently retired manager at Rockville Racquet Club, will receive the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award at the Region’s 23rd Annual Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 1 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. honoring local tennis champions. Both Nassau and Suffolk Counties are well represented by the many award winners who have accomplished so much both on the court with their stellar play and off the courts with their time and generosity.

In addition to Ms. Alvy, award winners include:

Terry Fontana, longtime coordinator of the Hicksville Community Tennis Association, who will receive the Vitas Gerulaits for the Love of Tennis Award, and Al Gunther, tennis coach at Uniondale High School, who will receive the Arthur Ashe Multicultural Award. Mr. Gunther collects and strings racquets at his own expense so that his players can compete. In addition to the prestigious awards, numerous tennis players will be recognized for their achievements on the court. They include the five USTA League Teams from Long Island who went to or are going to Nationals, including teams from Point Set Racquet Club, Carefree Racquet Club, Jericho/Westbury Indoor Tennis and Eastern Athletic Club/Blue Point. Also being honored will be high-achieving high school players, junior players and league players.

Special awards will be given to the families of Birdie Tarulli and Blane Magee, longtime league captains who passed away this year.

The list of Prestigious Award Winners follows. For a complete list of all award winners or for more information about attending the awards dinner, please visit www.longisland.usta.com. Opportunities are still available to sponsor the dinner, purchase tables and congratulate the award winners in the dinner journal.
