Switzerland’s Roger Federer defeated hometown favorite Andy Murray, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday to capture the 2012 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Championship in three hours and 24 minutes. The win marks Federer’s seventh Wimbledon crown, having won in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and now in 2012. Federer joins only William Renshaw and Pete Sampras as the only seven-time winners at Wimbledon as he now has a 66-7 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Sunday’s Wimbledon win marks Federer’s first Grand Slam crown since defeating Murray in the Australian Open Finals in 2010.
"This year, I guess, I decided in the bigger matches, to take it more to my opponent instead of waiting a bit more for the mistakes," said Federer. "This one hasn’t quite sunk in yet for some reason. I guess I was trying to be so focused in the moment itself that when it all happened I was just so happy that it was all over and that the pressure was gone basically."
With the win, Federer will return to the top spot atop the ATP World Tour Rankings, jumping from the number three spot to number one, supplanting Novak Djokovic who Federer defeated in the semifinals to advance to Sunday’s showdown with Murray. Federer ties Sampras’ all-time record of 286 weeks in the top spot.
