Wimbledon Seeds Announced; Djokovic and Serena Williams Earn Top Spots

The All-England Club released its seeding for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament on Wednesday, laying out the draw for the third major tournament of 2014.
Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were given the number one seeds on their respective sides. On the men’s side, a lot of seeding varied from the Emirates ATP World Rankings where Rafael Nadal holds the number one ranking.
The Spaniard who won the French open two weeks ago and has taken home the crown at Wimbledon twice, earned the number two seed while Andy Murray, who is the fifth ranked player in the world, was given the third seed. Murray won last year’s Wimbledon title over Djokovic, becoming the first British player to win the tournament since 1936.
Rounding out the top five on the men’s side are fourth-seeded Roger Federer and fifth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka.
Serena Williams earned the top seed in the women’s draw as the women’s seed tend to be based more on the WTA World Rankings. China’s Li Na will be seeded second, while French Open finalist Simona Halep will be the third seed. Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova are the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively.
While Serena is the number one seed, her sister Venus, who is a five-time Wimbledon champion, has slipped all the way to the 30th seed.
