Serena Williams’s bid for a sixth Sony Ericsson Open title came to an end Tuesday after she lost in the quarterfinals to Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The former world number one-ranked Wozniacki won 74 percent of her first serve points and converted three of her six break point opportunities. Serena hit 34 winners over the Wozniacki’s 12; however, she committed 36 unforced errors in comparison to Wozniacki’s total of 13.
“Everyone I play always plays the match of the year,” said Serena. “I just made a tremendous amount of errors. There’s no reason for that. I’m older and I shouldn’t do that. There’s no excuse. I’ve just got to stop that. It’s silly.”
Wozniacki advances to play world number two-ranked Russian Maria Sharapova, who defeated China’s Li Na in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 in just one hour and eight min. Sharapova had been winless in her last four meetings against Li Na, but ups her all-time record against her to 6-4.
Sharapova is seeking her first title at the Sony Ericsson Open, having made finals appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2011.
