Wozniacki Forced to Retire Against Kirilenko at New Haven Open

Caroline Wozniacki was forced to retire from her semifinal match against Maria Kirilenko at the New Haven Open on Friday with a knee injury. Wozniacki’s retirement ended her streak of 20 consecutive wins at the New Haven Open dating back to 2010. She injured her knee in her 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinals win on Thursday over Dominika Cibulkova.
This setback for Wozniacki may jeopardize her chances for next week’s 2012 U.S. Open, which gets underway on Monday, Aug. 27. Seeded eighth at the 2012 U.S. Open, Wozniacki is slated to begin her quest for the Open crown against Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu. Wozniacki plans to rest her leg the next few days in advance of the Open. Wozniacki had beaten Kirilenko in all five of their previous meetings.
Kirilenko, on the other hand, advances to her first ever final in North America where she will face the winner of the match played Friday afternoon between Petra Kvitova, who was crowned Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series champion, and the number four seed, Sara Errani.
