Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki defeated Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3 in opening round action of the 2012 New Haven Open. Wozniacki, currently ranked eighth in the world, remains undefeated at the event at a perfect 18-0, one in which she first entered in 2008 when it was known as the Pilot Pen. Wozniacki had to play in the first round of the New Haven Open for the first time since 2009, after being seeded third behind Agnieszka Radwanska and Petra Kvitova.

"Everything about the tournament and around the tournament just makes me feel at home and makes me feel like I can play well here," said Wozniacki. "I think the last few years I’ve had a bit of an easier opponent in the first round—I’ve played ‘Bye.’ I’m pretty comfortable playing ‘Bye.’ This year, unfortunately, ‘Bye’ wasn’t there."

Wozniacki moves on to next play Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden in the second round, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Melanie Oudin.

Also victorious on the opening day of the event were Sara Errani of Italy, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Bethanie Mattek-Sands; Maria Kirilenko of Russia, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Shahar Peer of Israel; Germany’s Mona Barthel, a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova; and reigning NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 winner over fellow qualifier Alexa Glatch.
