Due to a viral illness, Vera Zvonareva has become the latest women’s singles player to withdraw from next week’s 2012 U.S. Open. In 2010, The two-time Grand Slam runner-up lost in the Open finals to Kim Clijsters at Flushing Meadows. That same year, Zvonareva reached the final at Wimbledon. She had a career high ranking of number two in the world.
She recently retired in her third-round match due to illness when facing Clijsters again at Wimbledon. Zvonareva lost to Serena Williams 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16 at this year’s Olympic Games in London.
The Russian pulled out of the French Open due to a right shoulder injury, making this the second major tournament she has missed in 2012.
