The Ladies’ semifinals at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships took place in London on Thursday, with both Simona Halep and Serena Williams notching convincing straight-sets victories in their respective matches to move into Saturday’s final.

The first semifinal of the day pitted the seventh-seeded Halep against eighth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who was competing in her first major semifinal. Halep wasted no time in jumping Svitolina’s serve, breaking the Ukrainian in her first service game en route to winning the opening set in a convincing 6-1 fashion.

Halep’s relentless continued in the second set. After trading holds through the first six games, Halep secured the decisive break for a 4-3 lead in the second set, and after holding serve, broke Svitolina one more time to close out the 6-1, 6-3 victory and reach her first Wimbledon final.

“It’s very special, this moment,” said Halep. “To be able to a Wimbledon final, it’s pretty amazing. I will enjoy it for sure.”

In all, Halep converted on five of her eight break point chances, and fired 26 winners to just 14 unforced errors to advance in just one hour and 13 minutes.

“She was really strong. She didn’t give up a point. The rallies were very long and very powerful, as well,” Halep said of Svitolina. “It was really tough to stay there. But I knew that I was actually prepared against her to fight for every ball… I had to be there, I had to be strong. Today, I think it was, again, one of the best matches on grass.”

In the day’s second semifinal, Serena needed less than an hour to move past unseeded Czech Barbora Strycova 6-1, 6-2 and reach the Wimbledon finals for the 11th time in her career.

“I really want to do it,” said Serena, who is now into her third major final in the last 12 months, and has another chance to win her 24th Grand Slam and equal Margaret Court’s all-time record. “I’m in a different place because I wasn’t really playing a month ago; like, at all. So it’s all kind of coming together.”

Serena is 9-2 all-time against Halep, including a win at the Australian Open earlier this year. The two will square off on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. EST.
