American Madison Keys powered her way past Svetlanda Kuznetsova to win the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon, defeating Svetlana Kuznetosva 7-5, 7-6(5).

On the men’s side, Russian Daniil Medvedev continued his torrid play in August by beating David Goffin 7-6(3), 6-4 and winning the first Masters 1000 title of his career.

Keys fell behind 3-5 in both the first and second sets against Kuznetsova, before rallying to win both sets and capturing the biggest title of her career.

“I think I served really well today, especially in certain pockets. I think when I was doing a good job at moving forward and kind of trying to neutralize some of her deep, heavy, spinny shots, I was able to get out in front in the point and play a little bit more offense,” said Keys. “It’s obviously the biggest title I have ever won, and, I mean, it was a tough draw from the very start. I played some really, really great players from Round 1 until today. I definitely think I played some of my best tennis consistently this week.”

With the win, Keys moves up to No. 10 in the world.

For Medvedev, the Russian is now ranked inside the Top 5 for the first time in his career, and his win comes on the heels of back-to-back finals appearances in Washington, D.C. and Montreal.

“I have to say even if I wouldn’t have finished with the trophy, these weeks were amazing and the best in my life. But of course I think with the trophy is better,” said Medvedev. “Especially if I would have lost three finals in a row, I would have no doubted myself, but started asking myself, ‘how is it possible, three finals, lost all of them?’ What should I do differently in the final?

I don’t have to ask myself these questions because I won the final. It’s been the best weeks in my life. My serve was the best in my life. My tennis was really consistent. I didn’t have one bad match. I’m just extremely happy.”
